What is a state high school association?

A state high school association is the body that governs interscholastic sports in a state, such as the UIL in Texas or the CIF in California, and it usually sets the rules for whether and how high school athletes may earn NIL money.

Some states add a law or a state board of education rule on top of the association's rules. The national federation of state associations does not set one NIL rule for every state. Look up each state's association and rule under NIL rules by state.
