Maine NIL rules for college and high school athletes

Maine college athletes can earn NIL money under LD 1893, the state NIL law effective March 31, 2022. Maine high school athletes can earn NIL money under the Maine Principals' Association's NIL policy, adopted April 28, 2022, as long as they make no reference to their school or the MPA, keep NIL out of team activities, avoid banned categories and involve no school staff.

Maine NIL law for college athletes

Maine's college NIL law, LD 1893, took effect March 31, 2022. It protects the right of athletes at Maine colleges to earn NIL compensation; Maine colleges also set their own NIL policies.

Division I athletes also report third-party deals of $600 or more to NIL Go within five business days.

Maine high school NIL (MPA)

Appendix DD of the MPA Handbook, adopted April 28, 2022, lets a student-athlete profit from their own name, image and likeness through commercial endorsements, promotional activities, social media and product or service advertisements.

  • No one employed by a member school, including coaches, teachers and administrators, may be involved with a student's NIL.
  • No reference to a member school or the MPA in any NIL activity.
  • No endorsing or promoting third parties during team activities, and no NIL partner apparel, logo or marks during team activities.
  • Banned: adult entertainment, alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, controlled dangerous substances, prescription pharmaceuticals, casinos and gambling (including sports betting, the lottery and betting on video, online and mobile games), and weapons, firearms and ammunition.
