NIL rules by state
Vermont NIL rules for college and high school athletes
Vermont college athletes can earn NIL money under NCAA rules and their school's policy, because Vermont has no state college NIL law. For Vermont high school athletes, we could not confirm the Vermont Principals' Association's current NIL rule: it had not addressed NIL as of early 2023, and later summaries conflict, so check with the VPA and your athletic director before accepting any payment.
Sources conflict on whether the VPA has adopted an NIL rule, and we could not read the VPA's current policies.
| Level | Rule | Who sets it |
|---|---|---|
| College | No state statute | NCAA rules; school policy |
| High school | Unverified | Vermont Principals' Association (VPA) |

Vermont college NIL: no state law
We found no Vermont statute on college NIL. Vermont colleges, including the University of Vermont, Middlebury and Saint Michael's, set their own policies under NCAA rules, and athletes at those schools have reported NIL deals since 2021.
Division I athletes, such as those at the University of Vermont, also report third-party deals of $600 or more to NIL Go within five business days.
Vermont high school NIL (VPA)
The Vermont Principals' Association governs high school athletics in Vermont. As of January 2023 it was the only New England association that had not clarified whether students may profit from their NIL. A 2025 tracker describes a VPA rule allowing NIL with no pay for play, no school or VPA references or marks, no endorsements during school team events and a list of banned categories, but we could not confirm that rule from the VPA.
Until the VPA's current rule is confirmed, Vermont high school athletes should check with the VPA and their athletic director before accepting any NIL payment.
